Dennis Eric Hammond Metropolitan Funeral

After a long and valiant battle against cancer, Dennis Eric Hammond, 58, of Chesapeake, VA was called home to be with his Creator.  He was surrounded by family and friends who loved him.

It was evident Dennis’ purpose while here was to serve – his family, friends, and community.  Dennis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, departing for boot camp after graduating Indian River High School in 1982.  He served in the Marine Corps until 1987, at which time he joined the Army, staying until 1990.  Due to his dedication to duty, Dennis received several awards while in both branches of service.  Dennis was not done giving.  Shortly after his military service, Dennis became a member of the Chesapeake Police Dept retiring after 27 years.  He was recognized countless times by this organization for going above and beyond.  Because of his work ethic in traffic enforcement, the media interviewed him.  During his time with the Department, it would be hard to say which he enjoyed most, traffic duty or narcotics investigations.

Dennis had a big personality. His method of expressing himself was unique, but usually an accurate assessment.  Those that knew and loved Dennis would say, “That’s just Dennis.”  Husband, father, grandfather, brother, son-in-law, co-worker and friend, there was no one who remained a stranger for long.  Affectionately referred to as Pop-Pop, Dad, Uncle Dennis, or simply Dennis established a welcoming and safe home environment that friends and family seemed to gravitate to.  Dennis loved his family and the times he shared with them.  Others will always remember Dennis by his service in making their lives happier.  His passing created a void that, at best, will be difficult to fill.

His parents, James E. and Audrey M. Hammond, and his brother James R. Fayton predeceased Dennis in death.  Left to cherish the care, love, and joy Dennis shared:  his wife of 27 years Barbara (Marsi), (2) children (Christian, Chris), (5) grandchildren (Jayliah, Jayden, Grayson, Chris, Christina), (7) siblings – Edward Hammond (Joyce), Sheila Hopkins (Douglas), Jeanette Moore (Sherwood), Chris Hammond, Julie Braxton (James), Kevin Hammond (Gwen), Trina Rodgers, in-laws, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.
